Share files on a home computer network using Roxio for BlackBerry media manager

Doc ID : KB12798
Last Modified : 2007-05-23
Document Type : How To

Environment
  • BlackBerry® Desktop Software 4.2 Service Pack 2 (4.2.2)
Procedure

Background

BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.2.2 includes the Roxio® for BlackBerry media manager tool by Sonic Solutions. The My MediaSpace feature allows you to view and share media files with any other computers located in your home network that support the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) networking technology.

Use this feature if you want to access your media files from a different computer on your home network or allow members of your family to access or download your media files from their computers. All of the UPnP components required to share files with My MediaSpace are automatically installed with BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.2.2.

Notes
  • My MediaSpace allows you to share media files only; all other file types on your computer, such as documents or programs, are not visible to other users on your home computer network.
  • For UPnP requirements, see KB12799.
  • For assistance in configuring your home network routers or firewalls for UPnP sharing, click Help > Media Manager Help Center.
Procedure

To share media files on a home computer network, your computer must have sharing enabled and must authorize any other computers that are trying to gain access. To complete these steps, perform the following actions:
  1. Connect your BlackBerry smartphone to your computer, open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager, and then double-click Media Manager.
  2. Enable home network sharing by completing the following:
    • On the taskbar in the upper pane, click Sharing and choose Manage My MediaSpace (UPnP).
The Manage My MediaSpace dialog box appears.
    • To enable home network sharing, click Start Sharing.
The button name changes to Stop Sharing.
    • Click Done to close the dialog box.
  3. Grant access to computers on your home network:
    • On the taskbar in the upper pane, click Sharing, and then choose Manage My MediaSpace (UPnP).
The Manage My MediaSpace dialog box appears.
    • Select a computer with which you want to share your files, and click Authorize.
    • Repeat this step for each computer with which you want to share files.
    • Click Done to close the dialog box.
Once My MediaSpace is enabled and authorized, you can access shared files on the My MediaSpace (UPnP) tab.

Note: To disable home network sharing, click Stop Sharing. The button name changes to Start Sharing.
