Gary, followed points one and two. But before continuing on with point three I have a quick question: I downloaded and installed Vodaphone Firmware (point two) on my laptop - where/how/will this new firmware be picked up when I perform point four (via Desktop Manager) ?

Also, need to confirm that my 8310 should look exactly the same after erasure and reloading of all apps and firmware?

TIA, Gary.

Gary, I downloaded JL.Cmdr to my laptop, clicked on run, get window saying "about to install on computer", click continue and nothing happens (I'm running Vista).

Does the JL_Cmder prog do same as "wipe handheld" in security general settings?

Cheers.

A 'Nuke' will delete ALL software loaded on your device including the OS where as the 'Wipe Handheld' will just delete 3rd party applications and all your emails, phonebook entries, calender entries, etc (In essence taking the device back to factory default settings).

As Greg mention the JL_Cmdr will Nuke the device and remove all firmware from the device. This step is required to reload the firmware onto your device as a newer version isn't available. Normally if newer firmware was detected the device is erased during the upgrade and then replaced with the new firmware. As I have requested that you backup the device prior to performing these steps we can restore the device to the exact state if required after the upgrade.

Cheers guys, but still no luck running the JL_Cmdr on my Vista laptop. Googled the problem and it looks as though there are some known issues running on Vista. Oh well, for the time being might just go back to the workaround of simply fowarding emails, and revisit the subject when the new BB OS becomes available.

I'm currently running JL_Cmdr on three machines with Vista and it works fine. The only change that I have made is turning off User Access Control as this resolves most issues.

Thanks again, Gary. Just need to summon up the courage to go ahead with this. One further (probably dumb) question: as metioned earlier in this thread, my 8310 is an unlocked Vodaphone device running on Telstra. Does firmware upgrade have any bearing on lock/unlock?

Just want to have all queries covered before 'nuking' the bugger

Once your device is unlocked it is permanently unlocked.

Gary/Greg,

Hadn't gotten around to doing the nuke and re-install etc and have simply been forwarding emails to my BB email address (which is the workaround suggested earlier in this thread).

Anyhow, after one month since the problem first occurred, lo and behold, as of yesterday my 8310 suddenly slipped out of 'idiot mode' is now receiving all emails.

Nope, no soft or hard resets, deleting and recreating email accounts etc, or no deletion or installation of third party software etc that may have triggered 'normal behaviour'.

Yes, happy that it's now working fine, but from a problem determination POV this is a little unnerving.

Anybody else out there with a schizo 8310?

Yeah, I've got one that I take care of that has dropped "GPRS" for 'gprs'. No incoming date. Optus deny fault on their side. Etc, etc.
I have not had a chance to look at it yet. (Over the phone fixes only so far)
Should get to it in a couple of days and rectify. (Curve 8310)
