Desktop does not recognize unit

When I try to back or sync to the desktop the desktop says the following:

1)When I try to backup: "Could not establish communication to the device, an application is missing"

2) When I try to sync: "Unable to connect to handheld, please verify connection".

I have the latest 4.2 software loaded on both the desktop and the unit.

Not sure what is going on here. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

To resolve this problem you will first need to perform a clean uninstall using the steps listed below. Once you have uninstalled the Desktop manager restart the system and then reinstall but ensure you don't connect your device until the installation is complete.

To remove BlackBerry Desktop Software, complete the following steps:
  1. Close BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  2. Open the Control Panel and double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Select BlackBerry Desktop Software and click Change/Remove.
  4. On the InstallShield® Wizard window, click the Remove option, followed by Next.
  5. On the Uninstall Options window, check the box labeled Remove all user settings for BlackBerry Desktop Software
  6. On the Confirm Uninstall window, click OK.
  7. On the InstallShield Wizard window, click Finish.
