Angry SIM Card Error - v4.2

I have just received a Blackberry 8700g for work. I've inserted a new Telstra SIM card into the unit, which seems to work fine, but around 3-4 times a day I get a 'SIM Card Error' message which means that I have to reboot (i.e. remove and replace the battery) to recover from the error.

I've seen the Blackberry support advice that if this message is received, to upgrade the Device software to v4.1 or later - but I think my unit is running v4.2 already! How can I check to see if I am actually running v4.2?

If in fact I am running v4.2 - any ideas on how can I stop getting these SIM Card error messages?

Very frustrated.....

Vince

Hi Vince,

To confirm what firmware version you are running you go to "Options > About". Upgrading the firmware will most likely resolve this common issue with the 8700 device, but what I would recommend first is:

1. Ensure the SIM is inserted and locked in correctly.
2. Disabled the SIM PIN by going to Options > Advanced Options > SIM CArd > Press the trackwheel and select Disable Security.

What I have found with many 8700 devices is that the unit is unable to communicate to the SIM card as it losses the PIN. You can also test this (when SOS appears) by pressing and holding the power button until you are prompted with the shut down message, once the unit powers down press the power button again and you should be prompted for the SIM PIN and it will start functioning again.

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the response. My unit is running v4.2 already, so this is not the problem. I've checked the SIM card and it is seated correctly, and I have disabled SIM security as you have suggested. I'll wait a day and see how I go....

I have my fingers crossed...

Thanks again,

Vince

Hi Gary,

I'm still getting the error messages, albeit not as frequently. I'm only getting them once or twice per day. Disabling the PIN security has made it easier to recover from the error, though, as I now only have to power down and up using the power button (and not removing the battery).

It would be great to remove these errors once and for all - as they happen at the most inopportune moments i.e. while you're on a call!!!

Any other advice you or others reading the forum can provide would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Vince

The next step I would take would be to contact your service provider and arranging a changeover unit if it is still under warranty (2 years).

Thanks Gary - I've sent it back to Telstra this afternoon. Only problem is that this is the second unit that they've sent me, and both units have had the same problem!! What are the chances!

I'm currently using a borrowed unit - and having no problems at all. Perhaps I should keep the borrowed unit!!!

Thanks heaps for your help,

Vince

I would also go into a Telstra shop and request a SIM replacement.

Hi some of my friends faced exactly the same problem faced by Vince. My carrier replaced their SIM card with different IMSI series and problem has been fixed. Please check with your service provide and ask for SIM replacement.

My manager is experiencing the same thing. She has the 8700, SIM SEcurity is disabled, Version 4.2.196 is installed. Also the unit and sim card have been changed already by ATT... Next would be to request a different IMSI card (not sure if hte previous one was). Any answers appreciated. Thanks

To identify the exact cause please see if you can use a different SIM for a day (even a different carrier). By determining if it is the device or SIM it will assist in getting your issue resolved much faster.
