Question this chick needs help...Please!!!

ok I'm blond but not really so stupid... or I thought so before getting a BlackBerry 8700c as a present.

I thought I could use it as a normal phone, but I don't have any software or anything to install... I just have cables and bluetooth...

I don't even have a manual (does it come with one?)...

So I don't know what to do. I thought it was like a normal mobile, you just insert your sim card and turn it on... but I don't even manage to turn on or off, I have the screen always lit with a "sandtime" thingy rotating constantly...

Am I really so stupid?

could somebody help me please? or should I just recycle the present and sell it in ebay :-)

Thanks heaps

Titti

When you first turn on a blackberry the sand timer (a.k.a. Egg timer) always spins until the operating system loads (this can take approximately 1 to 2 minutes). If the device gets stuck with the timer on the screen it may indicate the firmware is corrupt which is very rare if this is a new device. Once the system has loaded you can just use the device as a normal phone. To download a copy of the desktop software please click this link and follow the download prompts: BlackBerry Desktop Software v4.3

Thanks Gary!!!
Unfortunately it seems that the firmware is currupt since it repeats the egg timer thingy every few seconds (e.g. screen gets dark and there is a red light on top, red light goes off and few sec later (3) the screen and the egg timer reappears... and goes on like that. No messages, no changes, always the same).
If it is corrupt may I fix it or my partner just got a broken BlackBerry?
Since he bought it in Ebay there is no way I can return it and get the money back...
(The guy was selling it because he couldn't find the software to use it for emails. He was using it just as a phone and he said it was perfectly working).

Thanks again for your kind help!!!

(ps about the sand timer... egg timer... in my language we call it clessidra... sorry for that, I should have checked the dictionary :-)

The process to correct your issue is as follows:

1. Wipe your device using using JL_Cmdr (Option 4) to remove the current firmware
2. Install Blackberry Desktop Manager and ensure you only select the Blackberry Internet Service option during the install
3. Download and install the latest firmware from your network provider (I will need you to post back with these details)
4. Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader and rename vendor.xml to vendor.bak
5. Connect your device and open BlackBerry Manager. Then select Application Loader and follow the prompts to load the new firmware. Please note this can take 30 minutes and the device may have an hour glass for up to 10 minutes.

As an alternative send an email to gary@blackberryforums.com.au and I will give you my work details and you can send the device to me and I will fix it for you (I'm in Melbourne).
