OS upgrade for 8800s (4.2.1.101)

My 8800 says it's running Applications 4.2.1.68 and I noticed that Telstra now have Applications 4.2.1.101 available (in package 4.2.1.164).

Can anyone tell me what the upgrade improves or fixes?

Or why the version numbers are so confusing? Why use similar numbering systems for packages and applications? I've quoted the Applications version number above because that's what I see in Options/About.

This firmware update has resolved a large number of Java errors that occurred during media playback and also is required for the correct operation of MMS on the Telstra network. Apart from fixes this firmware update includes additional devices features which also allowed correct operation on the latest BES and BIS versions.
