Optus, 3G SIM and Usage

Hello all,

Being my first post I feel obliged to apologize for my ignorance.

I have a few questions which to me are slightly urgent as I have my 8800 arriving tomorrow.

I'm currently with optus and have a 3G SIM card. Can I use this SIM in my blackberry? I know I won't have access to the 3G network, just need to know if I can access the phones functions on the SIM or whether I need to get a new one.

I'll be signing up for the $39.95 a month optus blackberry plan, was just curious about usage. It says unlimited blackberry internet and emails, but are there any catches? I've heard of people using vodafone, using Opera browser on the phone and getting data charges in the hundreds of dollars.

Thankyou in advance,

-Hank

Have a squiz here

Difference between Browser and Internet Browser

Basically WAP browsing (which Opera & other apps may use) is an extra cost.
BIS (internet browser) is part of your Plan.

Maybe call up Optus & see if they can disable WAP, so you don't accidentally use it. Or alternatively let us know what OS comes with your BB (goto Options->About - it'll be v4.x ) as you should be able to delete the APN info from Options->Advanced->TCP to stop it too.

Thanks for the reply.

Once I get my blackberry I'll post what OS it is.

There is also the question about the 3G SIM card, will it work in the blackberry as a standard GSM service?

Sorry, yep it'll be fine.
SIM's are backward compatible. (with all phones, including blackberrys).

Just got my 8800 in the mail, its sexy.

The OS is 4.2.1.101.

What is the actual process for deleting the APN info? Just going into TCP? Is there any major damage I can accidentally do?

Thanks,

-Hank

Hi,

A BlackBerry won't have any manual APN settings by default but you can confirm by going to "Options > Advanced Options > TCP". Also Optus have a new firmware update for your device for which I have posted the details below:

Optus BlackBerry 8800 Handheld Software v4.5.0.75 (English & Chinese)

Package Version: 4.5.0.75
Consisting of:
  • Applications: 4.5.0.52
  • Software Platform: 2.7.0.66
  • File name: 8800EastAsia_PBr4.5.0_rel75_PL2.7.0.66_A4.5.0.52_O ptus.exe
  • File size: 70.99MB

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the reply. When I click that link though I get a 404 error. I noticed you posted the link in my other topic too, but it also gives the 404 error.
