"Can anyone tell me if"

1) the 8800 supports 3g
The 8800 currently only supports GPRS and EDGE

2) Is a Japanese character set is available for download like the 7290
I can't confirm these details at this point.

3) Is this available in Australia
Not yet. ETA currently isn't available. I will post updates as soon as I find out any further information.

4) Any other model that suits this description??
Currently the only option for 3G and Japanese character support is the BlackBerry 8707 which is available in Australia.

The 8707 is a 3G capable handset. Also this device is currently only available from Optus and Vodafone.

Which provider are you purchasing the device from? I believe the Australian version may have it installed by default. To confirm go to "Options > Advanced Options > Applications" and you should see "BlackBerry Japanese Characters and Font Support".

I can confirm that the Optus 8707g and Vodafone 8707v both have support for Japanese built in. Please note that this built in functionality only allows you to view Japanese characters and font, it does not allow you to input symbols.

Hi again

I now have tested a 8707v for Japanese Character support using these test messages (fonts):

1. 漢字、当用漢字、常用漢字
2. あいうえお、かきくけこ、さしすせそ、なにぬねの
3. アイウエオ、アイウエオ、カキクケコ、カキクケコ

They are not all supported as I would expect. Can I ask what I / RIM can do to resolve this issue?

Regards Garry
