Unhappy 8820 No Service

I just recently purchased the 8820 off someone, and put my optus sim card in. It searches for networks but nothing happens and i have no service all the time. The service indicator in the top right hand corner has a cross next to it.
Can anyone Help plz? The phone is unlocked.
