Overview
The BlackBerry smartphone does not receive email messages from an integrated Hotmail or MSN email account.
Cause
Summary of Causes
This issue can be caused by the following:
- There are too many email messages in the Hotmail mailbox.
- There are large messages in the Inbox folder of the Hotmail or MSN account.
- There have been changes made to the Hotmail or MSN email account.
Resolution
Refer to the appropriate resolution for your cause.
Cause 1
There are too many email messages in the Hotmail mailbox.
Resolution
Create subfolders or delete old email messages to keep the email message count within the Inbox folder below 900.
Cause 2
There are large messages in the Inbox folder of the Hotmail or MSN account.
Resolution
Move messages larger than 8MB, including attachments, from the Inbox folder to a subfolder in the Hotmail or MSN account (see the
Additional Information section below).
Note: For BlackBerry Internet Service version 2.X, verify that the Sent Items folder does not contain messages larger than 8MB, including attachments.
Cause 3
There have been changes made to the Hotmail or MSN email account.
Resolution
MSN is upgrading all accounts to Windows Live™. In order to receive email you will need to complete the following steps:
- Log in into your Hotmail or MSN account.
- Click We’re Updating Your Account.

- Select Update to Windows Live.
- Sign into your BlackBerry Internet Service account.
- Remove and reintegrate the Hotmail or MSN email account into the BlackBerry Internet Service account. For instructions, see KB02189.
Additional Information
The BlackBerry Internet Service can time out when connecting to a mail folder if the email message count exceeds 900 email messages. For more information, see
