You can use the device on EDGE or GPRS but 3G is much faster. The Storm isn’t going to be Sold Outright, so if you are planning on using it on another carrier you will have to sign up for a Vodafone plan.

I may have info that contradicts the outright sale theory but will post it here after the release. (There is a couple of suppliers than don't plan to play by the rules... ...)

It appears a number of stores are selling the devices outright (e.g. selected Crazy John's stores). I have been told they are charging $75 to get the devices unlocked.

What are those "suppliers" please? Will try Crazy John in Vic, but not sure they have it.

Just a matter of asking around. I did it face to face. Over the phone they tend to give you the std contract blurb...

Note it doesn't support the 900Mhz range used by Vodafone/Optus for their newer 3G network.
The spec sheet on the blackberry site says:

"Europe/Asia Pacific: 900MHz GSM/GPRS networks"

Surely this means it WILL work on vodafone's new network being rolled out? Or is the new 900MHz network not a GSM/GPRS? I tend to get kind of lost as to what exactly 3G means...
