Article Number: KB-00006

Summary

This article applies to the following:
  • BlackBerry® Desktop Manager
  • BlackBerry Desktop Redirector
  • Microsoft® Exchange
  • Microsoft Outlook®
Problem

When you open the BlackBerry Desktop Redirector, you receive the following error:
Connection to your email system could not be initialized.

Summary of Causes

This problem is caused by any of the following:
  1. Outlook is not configured as the default mail client.
  2. The Redirector Settings are not configured correctly.
  3. You are not connected to the corporate Local Area Network (LAN).
  4. You are unable to receive messages from your Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox.
  5. The local Exchange Server is not functioning properly.
  6. You are experiencing Domain Name Server (DNS) problems.
  7. The Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile is corrupt.
Cause 1

Outlook is not configured as the default mail client.

Resolution

Verify that Outlook is configured as the default mail client.
  1. From the Control Panel, double-click the Internet Options icon.
  2. On the Programs tab, verify the Email field displays Microsoft Outlook, and click OK.
Cause 2

The Redirector Settings are not configured correctly.

Resolution

Verify Redirector Settings are configured correctly.
  1. In Desktop Manager, open Redirector Settings.
  2. On the Advanced tab, click Profile Settings.
  3. Verify the correct MAPI profile is displayed in the field provided and click OK.
  4. In the Redirector Settings window, click OK.
Cause 3

You are not connected to the corporate LAN.

Resolution

Make sure you are connected to the corporate LAN.

Cause 4

You are unable to receive messages from your Exchange Server mailbox.

Resolution

Verify you can receive messages in your Outlook client. If you are unable to receive messages in your mailbox, you will be unable to receive messages on your BlackBerry wireless device.

Cause 5

The local Exchange Server is not functioning properly.

Resolution

Contact your service provider to confirm that the Exchange Server is functioning properly.

Cause 6

You are experiencing DNS problems.

Resolution

Ping the Exchange Server by the IP address and common name. Contact your service provider for further assistance.
Note: If you cannot ping the Exchange Server, there may be network problems. If you are only able to ping by the IP address, there are DNS issues that must be resolved, as the BlackBerry Solution requires DNS to function.

Cause 7

The MAPI profile is corrupt.

Resolution

Complete the following:
  1. Create a new MAPI profile. For instructions, please see Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 195718.
  2. Configure Desktop Manager to use the new MAPI profile. For instructions, please see KB-03650.
