Internal Error 4238 Transaction Cancelled for Microsoft Outlook

Internal Error 4238 Transaction Cancelled for Microsoft Outlook

Doc ID : KB03602
Last Modified : 2007-06-21
Document Type : Support

Environment
  • BlackBerry® Desktop Software
  • Intellisync®
  • Microsoft® Exchange
  • Microsoft Outlook®
Note: In BlackBerry Desktop Software 4.2 and later, Intellisync is referred to as Synchronize.

Problem

When the Intellisync synchronization process fails, the following error message appears in the RIM.log file in the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager:

Internal Error #4238 Transaction Cancelled!

Note: For instructions on opening the RIM.log file, see the Additional Information section of this article.

Resolution

Perform one of the following to resolve this issue.

Resolution 1

Delete the Intellisync folder. For instructions, see KB11703.

Resolution 2

Create a new Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile.
  1. Create a new MAPI profile.
    • For instructions on how to create a Microsoft Outlook XP MAPI profile, see KB01528.
    • For instructions on how to create a Microsoft Outlook 2003 MAPI profile, see KB03671.
    • For instructions on how to create a Microsoft Outlook 2000 MAPI profile, see KB02083.
Note: When setting the MAPI properties, make sure that email messages are being delivered to your mailbox, and not a .pst file.
  2. Configure BlackBerry® Desktop Manager to use the new MAPI profile. For instructions, see KB03650.
Resolution 3

Configure advanced logging for Intellisync and send a copy of the PtTrace.log and tif.log files to your service provider for analysis. For instructions, see KB01451 Task 5.

Additional Information

Open the RIM.log file
  1. On your computer, open the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
  2. Open the Intellisync icon.
  3. Click View log. The RIM.log file will open in Microsoft Notepad.
Note: Creating a new MAPI profile also applies to Groupwise 7l. This issue may occur after Daylight Saving Time (DST) patches are applied.

None of these suggested resolutions worked for me

After sync error, I tried all these suggested resolutions with no success. I would use BB Desktop Manager to clear the device address book database, sync, and only a few records would load onto the device before the process terminated with the 4238 error. I reviewed the sync log, systematically deleted "SKIPPED" contacts, and started over several times hoping to get past a few bad contact records, but the error persisted. I ended up using BB DM to clear the device address book database, and then use DM Backup & Restore to restore the device address book from an earlier AutoBackup. Then, I deleted all contact records from Outlook Express and synchronized. This worked, and now I can make updates to either OE or the BB and sync the records.

I hope this saves some of you some time--I wasted more than a few hours trying to figure this out.
