Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8310/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/146)

The comments are flying thick and fast on the Mac forums. (And suprisingly not all of it Pro-Mac/Anti-BlackBerry.

I have to say that I am very impressed with the feedback provided by the Apple forums. Thanks everyone

I received a news update on the iPhone in Australia last Thursday 10/4/08.
In short... The iPhone will be released in Australia in the last week on June 2008 to coincide with the Apple store opening in Sydney.
Now for the kicker...Unlocked to ALL networks. (Apple could not get what they wanted out of a carrier in Australia so have given exclusive rights to no-one). And it will be the '3G' 2.0v iPhone. (Could be even before the release date in the US...)
Now I know, this is not an Apple forum, but I thought with the amount of reads on this one, there is a heap of interest in the iPhone in Australia.

vodafone did announce the iphone for australia. so i think u could be on the money there Greg.
the question is, if apple couldnt come to terms with a carrier here, then data plans could be costly as hell. and whats the iphone without some sort of decent data plan. a sexy ipod touch u can make phone calls on.. hehehe.

I read your post in the thread as to why the iPhone won't succeed in a business environment, and I think you're totally wrong on all counts:

Quote:
1. The device is primarily designed as an entertainment unit which would distract users from actually doing work. Time waisted playing on an iPhone results in financial losses for the company using these devices.
The Blackberry has media features too. Just because the features are there, doesnt mean people have to use them. If people are "wasting time" watching video/playing music, then there's an issue with the person wasting time, not a fault of the device.

Quote:
2. The units touch screen keyboard is slow and awkward to type on.
You just aren't used to it. I find my touch screen much more responsive to type on than the tiny QWERTY keys on other smartphones.

Quote:
3. The data speed on an iPhone is much slower in comparison to other devices using the EDGE network devices (This has been officially tested).
Got any links to back this up?

Quote:
4. The fact that Apple locks in exclusive dealers in order to get kick backs limits companies that are locked into contacts with other providers. Also some companies won't want to change to an alternative network.
If the device is compelling enough, they'll change providers. I'm sure a lot of businesses switched to Telstra when the Blackberry first came out.

Quote:
5. The devices reception is very poor and I have found at my desk I only have limited coverage.
I find my reception has improved over my Nokia mobiles on the same network.

Quote:
6. The unit would be considered as fragile; this does not suit any business that offers company phones as users always destroy their devices.
How is it less fragile than say, a Blackberry Perl? It has no moving parts on it, just a single button. I've dropped my iPhone on the footpath abotu 3 times and it's fine. The screen is scratch proof also.

Quote:
7. At this stage there is no corporate solution for email or full wireless PIM sync.
Did you see the iPhone v2.0 software? It syncs with Exchange way better than the Blackberry does, with no need to purchase or maintain extra software and without relying on a central provider overseas.

Quote:
8. After using my iPhone for a few months as a personal phone I had issues with battery life.
I find the battery life fantastic. I've had much worse Palm and Nokia devices.

Quote:
9. The ease to which hackers can unlock and modify the iPhone would be considered a major security issue.
Oh, and the Blackberry is invulnerable?

As the admin of a Blackberry forum, you're obviously biased. You like what you use so much you made a forum about it!

Thank you for your feedback. Please read all the other posts and you will find follow up information which answers your questions. Also this thread is very old and firmware v2 wasn't released so feel free to start a new thread to discuss the new device. Also if you go to www.google.com.au and search for things I've mentioned above (e.g. iPhone Battery Issues) you will find hundreds of links and news articles discussing those topics.
