which model should I get

Hi all,

Work is getting me a blackberry through Telstra, where I have a choice in which one i get. unfortunately i know very little about blackberry's, thus the thread.

I'm a consultant, so will use it for basic emailing on an ad-hoc basis while on-site. I would like something with mp3 capability to cut down on lugging an mp3 player also.

I hear telstra has a new model out / coming soon that is supposed to have better coverage, is this correct? I live in Nth QLD, where telstra reps have little knowledge about blackberry's.

any help would be appreciated.

cheers,
Dusty

Get a BlackBerry Curve series device - it offers a full QWERTY keyboard (like on a computer), it's quick and it's out-of-the-box multimedia capabilities are reasonable.

If you need something with NextG coverage for rural use though, you have two options - buy a BlackBerry Connect-compatible Nokia E51, or wait 6-ish months for a NextG BlackBerry to become available...

thanks cybacowboy.
I don't see too many differences between each of the curve models, is there any one in particular that i should be asking for?

next G would be handy as i commonly work in remote areas, but I don't think i can wait 6 months. work is set on blackberry's, so i guess the nokia is not an option.

From my experience Telstra reps in Sydney have no knowledge either. We ended up buying a Blackberry Curve 8310 from Crazy Johns and unlocking it for use on Telstra.

Telstra should be releasing a 8310 soon which is like their current model but it has GPS built-in. Telstra have also released the 8110 to corporate customers and is also available from select Telstra Corporate dealers e.g Mobile Network - Blackberry 8110

I use the Blackberry Curve (8300) and have used (and still own) the Blackberry Pearl (8100).... for emails etc, I prefer the Curve to the Pearl, as the bigger screen is the advantage in my books. The Pearl's big advantage for on the fly emails is the sure type keyboard (a bit like predictive text, only better) so in my thoughts, an email can be bashed out a lot quicker on the Pearl to the Curve.

But as previous members said, the 8110 and 8310 have a few upgrades over the 8300 and 8100 that I have.

My 2 cents....

Research in Motion (RIM) are expected to officially unveil their new BlackBerry devices tomorrow (US time), and at least one model is expected to be compatible with Telstra's NextG network...

We probably won't know EXACTLY when these new models will be available, but we should have a rough idea this time tomorrow.

Just keep a close eye on this site - at least one of us regulars will post the details of any new models that are announced...

Does anyone know when the 8310 will be released by telstra? I see its still not on their website.

I can probably wait another month until I need to get a BB. Is it realistic that i would get an 8310 in that timeframe, or should i bite the bullet and get an 8300 now? (would prefer to buy through Telstra on a plan as work has all our accounts through them).

Thanks for your help.

Dusty
