Blackberry provider in Australia

Hi All,

This is my first post here, just join several minutes ago.
I had try to find the archive but it didn't have a lot of answer that i need.

I already use Blackberry (BIS) for 1 year, currently stay in Indonesia, and I'm planning to move to Sydney, Australia.

Few days ago I had try to check some of the information related about blackberry services that provide from several service provider in Australia, such as Telstra, Vodafone, Three and Optus.
But I still didn't really clear about the package that said unlimited mobile email access.

May be somebody can help to give me some information, is the APN blackberry.net will be unlimited for the BIS package and just need to extra pay if we're using an application that use operator APN or the unlimited will just for email only?
because i need to know which package that I should to take if I'm move to Australia.
My current application usage is:
- email,
- blackberry browser
- jivetalk
- yahoo messenger
- blackberry messenger
- googletalk
- google apps
- google maps
- yahoo go
- viigo

Since in Indonesia, all the provider now provide unlimited access for any application that work using apn blackberry.net and will charge for the operator apn usage.

My last question, is there any mailing list for blackberry users in Australia ? I'm currently active users in id-blackberry mailing list.

Thx

Tjiputra

Hi Tjiputra,
Any of the service providers that you have listed are able to provide 'Unlimited' email and wireless internet plans. All are priced at around the $79 per month package for unlimited email and web browsing (via BlackBerry browser). All the applications you have listed will be able to be set up to run through your BB browser.
The carriers web sites are as clear as mud when it comes to explaining their own BlackBerry packages. If you have any more questions when you do get here, just drop the question here and we will do our best to answer you.
Hope this helps.
Kindest Regards,
Greg Myers

help

Hey Greg,

i am very newbie with bb. i have unlimited browsing plan with optus ($79 cap).
i was wondering what you mean by "if all the application is run throught the BB browser". Well for browsing is pretty obvious..how about for example application such as Blackberry Messnger, Msn messenger, etc that has each individual icon. Is it require a set up ? if it is, do you mind tell me how to set it up.

Many Thanks in advance,
Chris

Hi,

Blackberry & MSN Messenger use the BlackBerry APN by default so they don't require any configuration. Other applications may have an option menu which allows you to change the data service it uses (e.g. WorldMate Live). The main thing you need to do is ensure that in "Options > Advanced Options > Browser" that the default Browser is the BlackBerry Browser and not the WAP browser (this browser normally has your carrier name in the title e.g. Optus Zoo, Vodafone Live or Telstra Business Portal).

Thanks,

Gary

Hi, I have the same issue with the thread starter.
I'm currently living in Indonesia, and already have a Blackberry device.
I'm going to Australia to study in Adelaide, and I will bring my BB device as well. I wonder what provider I can use as my BIS client. I tried to look for some information about the activation and rates applied on some providers (optus and 3), but the only thing I can found was a bundled BB device and its plan, which means I have to buy the new device also. What I want is an information whether i can activate my Blackberry Internet Service using my already owned device (it's an Onyx), which provider would give the best offer, how much it will cost for the activation, what plan i could use. Any idea?
Thank you for your attention and your help.

Asti.

Hi,
There are a number of carriers here that offer a BIS plan for your device. I would recommend any of the main 3 (Telstra, Optus or Vodafone). Optus offer a prepaid BlackBerry plan which may have benefits over the rest in your case if you are only here on a temporary basis.
You can check out their plans at: Optus - Personal - Plans & Rates: BlackBerry
Hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions if you need.
Kind Regards,
Greg Myers

I actually found out today this isn't entirely true.

If you wish to go with vodafone and don't mind signing up to a 24 month contract and have your own device, it's only $10 extra a month to get unlimited email and browsing (BIS) provided you go on one of their cap plans.

That information can be found here:

Internet Email with BlackBerry® - Mobile Internet & Vodafone live! - Vodafone Australia

The information about the caps can be found here:

Mobile Contracts: Handsets, Internet, iPhone & Sim Only Caps - Vodafone Australia

With the caps starting at $20 a month, you can actually get $150 worth of calls/txts with BIS for $30 a month.

Hi Gary,

I checked my settings as outlined below from you. when I go into the setting to check the default browser settings, the settings are as follows:

Default browser configuration: Internet Browser

Default MDS browser configuration: Internet Browser

Deafaul WAP browser configuration: Vodafone Live

My settings don't have the option to select "Blackberry Browser", does this matter?

I know when I check my Vodafone online account, when I check my usage, it actually states BB Usuage download amounts, so does that mean when I am surfing the internet its going through the Blackberry Browser.

When I go onto the net on my BB storm 2, i always go through the BB browser icon. Is this the right way of getting the unlimited BB features that come on my plan?

Also, if I'm using youtube or pages with video download, is that coming off the unlimited BB internet download even though I've gone through the BB browser?

I have 50mb of included data download on top of my BB unlimited plan, but I jhave noticed lately that I ate about 16mb into this 50mb and I think it may of come from looking at a couple of youtube clips.

I'm worried that I might not be using the BB unlimited internet to its potential and I don't want to find I"ve been charged huge amounts in excess fees at the end of the month on data download.

Any suggestions and answers to my above questions will be s greatful.

Cheers

Craig

Streamaing video (e.g. YouTube) is not supported over the blackberry network (e.g. Blackberry/Internet Browser), so it defaults to the WAP/Carrier browser

Blackberry Browser & Internet Browser are the same thing. (my Telstra BIS browser is also called the later).
