Opera Mini on BIS - a workable answer?

Hi,

I have an 8100 on BIS - casual BB email plan and Telstra voice plan. (a data pack is also applied but will be being removed soon)

After searching around in the forums for info, it seems that the only way to browse is to have a BB email plan and make sure any apps use the blackberry.net - I hope I have that right!

Based on that, under "Advanced Options > TCP" I tried setting APN to blackberry.net but Opera Mini still wouldn't work; I then tried adding my Blackberry account's username & password in the fields below that and voila, Opera Mini now works. I also have mini monitor going but I can't tell yet exactly what it is measuring - I need to do some more reading.

What I would like to know is if any of the experts here can confirm that this will direct Opera Mini to browse through the BB portal, as opposed to the Telstra WAP portal? (at the moment I am also covered by a casual data pack which will limit the expense if I am wrong!)

Regards,
Brian

The only true way to tell is call Telstra and see how much chargeable data you have downloaded. The reason I say to call is that it can depend on the exact plan you are on and service provider terms & conditions always change.

Try this:

Leave the APN fields blank, go to 'Options' or 'Settings' --> 'Advanced Options' --> 'Applications' --> 'Opera Mini' click on the Menu button and 'Edit Permissions' set 'Connections' to 'Allow'.

See if you can go online with Opera Mini now.

Thanks Gary, I will try to monitor the usage data on my account page online - it should show if any activity is being captured there, but I will need to leave time between using and looking to allow data to flow through, and avoid using any WAP data at all so it doesn't stuff up the measurement.

Andy, your method works, but I will need to do the measurement as suggested by Gary to see if it is a viable option.

Thanks & Cheers guys,
Brian

Edit: - Using andy's method I'm still getting some "not connected" messages, e.g. when browsing to "Opera community"; when I have verified the data usage measurements, I'll try going back to my previous settings & verify that.
