This is based on DM 4.3. If you use DM 4.5, the whole process is relatively tweak free.

Got to step 5 and nothing happens i.e. doesn't offer to run DM (V4.6 beta).

So this is where I'm at:

DM V4.6 succesfully installed on laptop

OS V4.5 has been successfully installed on laptop

8310 is connected to laptop running DM 4.6 via USB but has not been prompted to upgrade to new OS V4.5

DM V4.6 appears to be be working fine, as I was able to perform backup from 8310

???

Cheers.

Try this...
1) Terminate DM.
2) Connect BB to PC via USB
3) Run OS upgrade.
4) OS upgrade should install. At the end of install, it will offer to start DM to upgrade the BB. Say "yes" to this offer!
5) DM should start and check for updates. At this point, it should note a new OS is present and proceed to upgrade.

If you are doing everything right, then it may be DM 4.6 that is the problem and reverting back to DM 4.5 may help. <scratch head>

You need to go to "\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader" and delete the vendor.xml file. Once this file is removed reconnect your device and you will be prompted to upgrade.

A couple of issues following the upgrade:

1) BBSmart Email Viewer refuses to show images in emails and fails "connections test" in "connections setup" option - emailed BBSmart tech support.

2) when using browser cannot login to this forum (and other forums) - able to type in username but can't get cursor to password field - frustrating.

Any ideas, fellas?

Hi Chippy,
1) BBSmart Email Viewer does not work with OS 4.5 (yet). I find this application a bit redundant with the new lay-out of the native viewer anyway.

2) To log into this site from your BlackBerry (or any mobile internet device) try this address: http://wap.blackberryforums.com.au
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards.

Had a response from BBSmart people, as follows:

"After some investigation it seems that within the last week RIM has changed around the way BIS connections are established from third-party applications, and this is why you are unable to establish a connection from within BBSmart Email viewer (and hence images are not working). We are working now on a fix and hope to release it within the next two weeks."

Yes, the new-look email viewer in OS V4.5 presents a bit better however I am also not receiving images in emails. Also, can't see an options list for changing background colours etc.

Where specifically should I be looking?

There is no color variance option in the native BB email viewer (even with 4.5). Just have to wait for BBSmart for the fix on that one.
Any images you receive in your emails will come in as attachments and you will need to open the attachment before they can be viewed within your email.
