Difference between Browser and Internet Browser

Hi there,
I am new to this forum and new to my Blackerry Bold. I have an Optus plan and whenever I request technical advice i get differing answers! No surprise there!
I am hoping someone here can please tell me the difference between Internet Browser and Browser? I understand one will cost me a fortune while the other is covered by my $29 cap plan, which is a bolt on plan.
I am also connected via sifi, but am not sure if my onli ne activity will automatically use that when on?
Also, whewre do i get maps for the GPS? and, how does that usage get charged?
I really appreciate any advice i can get.
Thanks,

Differences in browsers on the BlackBerry device

Differences in browsers on the BlackBerry device

Doc ID : KB03892
Last Modified : 2007-06-05
Document Type : What Is

Environment
  • BlackBerry® device
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server
  • BlackBerry® Internet Service
Details

Depending on the service provider and integration option (BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Internet Service), more than one browser may appear on the BlackBerry device.

WAP Browser

The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Browser views Wireless Markup Language (WML) web pages. This browser is provided by the service provider. The WAP browser’s name and icon typically varies between service providers.

BlackBerry Browser (or Browser)

The BlackBerry® Browser views HTML web pages both on the Internet and the work intranet. It is available if the BlackBerry device is integrated with an email account using one of the following:
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 3.5 or later for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 2.2 or later for IBM® Lotus® Domino®
For more information on the BlackBerry Browser, see KB01918 or contact your system administrator.

Internet Browser

The Internet Browser on the BlackBerry device views HTML web pages. Some service providers enable the Internet Browser as part of the BlackBerry Internet Service. The Internet Browser is available if the BlackBerry device has BlackBerry Device Software 3.7 through 4.0. However, some service providers require BlackBerry Device Software version 4.0 to use the Internet Browser. For more information on the Internet Browser, see white paper BlackBerry Internet Service - Internet Browser or contact your service provider.

So in short:

WAP Browser = this internet browser uses your carriers APN (e.g. telstra.internet) to access the web. Normally data downloaded via this browser is charged at an additional cost by the provider.

Internet Browser = this internet browser uses RIM's APN (e.g. blackberry.net) to access the web. Internet data from this browser is normally free as it is included in your BlackBerry data plan (BIS or BES)

BlackBerry Browser (or Browser) = this internet browser uses the internet connection of your Blackberry Enterprise Server to access internet data (via MDS). If you have an unlimited BES plan this data is free of charge.

Thank you so much, and apologies for not getting back sooner. If i can avoid a scary bill from Optus due to their inability to reveal the correct information...
Cheers,
Moljac.

Hi Gary,

have you considered having a "FAQ sticky" area of the forum? Posts like this are very helpful, but over a short period of time they get buried...... if there was a section of the forum dedicated to this info, new users would be able to get a much better grasp on all things BB, it may also help reduce your need to answer similar questions multiple times...

Just a thought,
Brian

So how do I tell the difference?
I have an Optus icon on my homescreen (I'm guessing this is a WAP browser) and one titled Browser (No 3 above?)
what is the second option of Internet browser.

Hi,

Optus Zoo is the WAP Browser. If you are on BIS the "Internet Browser" (this is also what it is labelled on the device) is not normally present as the carrier disables it by default and you have to request the service. If you are on BES it is best to have your I.T Administrator change the title of the MDS browser with I.T Policy (e.g. Company Web).

Thanks,

Gary

I am new to BB so I am still confused, after having read all of the above, as I cannot relate this back to what I have arranged for my new BB Storm, which is on order, and on a $69/month "unlimited" account.

When I ordered the Storm, I made sure the monthly price included both BIS and BES - I intend to use BIS to access personal webmail and BES to access my work (corporate) email.

So my question is, does the web data come through one of these accounts or is it sourced straight from the internet? From the description given above it seems like if you have BES, the data comes through the corporate servers, which, depending on the company, would probably be a no-no ...

Please explain.

Hi,

When you are on BIS you have a carrier Browser (WAP) and a BlackBerry Browser (IBS). When you are on BES you have the first two plus a different BlackBerry Browser which is referred to as the MDS Browser. If your BES has been configured correctly the WAP and IBS are removed via I.T Policy. In this case only the MDS browser remains and ALL data travels via the BES and is part of your "unlimited" plan.

Thanks,

Gary

Thanks for the response Gary. Forgive my ignorance here as a newbie, but I am still uncertain as to whether BIS and BES are mutually exclusive i.e. can you have only one or both at the same time?

If I can only have one, I would obviously lean towards BES as I am buying BB mainly for corporate email access, but in that case, would I still be able to access my webmail via BES? If the answer is yes then I am guessing I would be at the mercy of the corporate IT systems administrator to allow me access via BES (which they would control?) - or could I set that up independently?

To summarise my question - can I organise for a BES connection to access work email (MS Exchange) and still access my private web-mail?
