Thanks again Dunxed - you know, the reason I asked you about whether or not an ABN was required, is because I've been told completely conflicting things from optus shop staff, numerous times! One store told me no ABN was required for the blackberry 79 cap, another told me I did need an ABN... it seems it varies from store to store, day to day - is it just me, or are optus staff completely inept and clueless?
One more question - I've been using a dopod 838 pro for 2 years, and was syncing to outlook using windows sync. What do I do once I have the BBbold and have installed the new software for syncing? will there be a problem with outlook syncing given that my dopod device has been synced with it/is registered with my outlook, etc? Or will it all be simple once I sit down and go through the installation process? (Like, will I need to uninstall the windows sync or de-register the dopod somehow inorder to avoid complications?) Just a little nervous about things not working!

Hi dunxed,

I had a hotmail account but let it lapse, as originally the hotmail accounts were apparently not useable with the BlackBerrys... this goes back a few years.

I have 1 x gmail account, 1 x yahoo (rocketmail) account, and 5 x outlook accounts onto my Bold.... out of these I only need 3 x outlook accounts to work in sync (ie. deleted on BlackBerry, deleted in outlook, opened on BlackBerry, opened in outlook, sent on BlackBerry, copy in sent folder in outlook). As for my gmail and yahoo accounts... seeing as they are web accounts, I actually hardly go to them on my PC, rather work on these on my BlackBerry....

So, sorry, but can't really answer your question here, as I do not need the functionality of a web based account, to the level you do.

From what I can see on the official Optus terms and conditions for the $79 cap plan there is no ABN required;
From Optus-
"BlackBerry $79 Cap are only available to eligible business customers as defined by Optus connecting to the Optus Mobile Digital service. Optus Pre-paid, Optus CDMA, MobileSat, service provider customers, or Corporate customers are not eligible."

Hi Marissa,

As for the complete exageration of the competency of the Optus staff, it would pay not to generalise so much.... I honestly do not believe any one carrier's staffare better than another, and seeing as these people sell so many different handsets with so many different functionalities, I can actually understand the responses you have gotten. I have experienced the same sort of things from Vodafone and Telstra, and other members have experienced the same with 3.

What I would suggest if you want straight answers, is to ask our members if they know a contact within Optus that they can recommend... as most of the carrier's sales people are on commission structures, I am sure the recommended person would be keen to help out (sorry, cannot recommend anyone here, as can only do so for Telstra).

Sorry for the rant, but like any industry, there are goods and bads, and it seems the more technology is involved, the more bads appears instead of the goods. But back to your issues...

You wrote....

"What do I do once I have the BBbold and have installed the new software for syncing? will there be a problem with outlook syncing given that my dopod device has been synced with it/is registered with my outlook, etc? Couple of things you need to do with the Bold... assuming it has not been set up:
  • Sign up with Optus for a new BIS plan
  • Optus activates the BIS plan
  • Now from either the BlackBerry browser or from your PC via the Optus BIS website, create a optus.ap.blackberry.net email address and password
  • Now add your existing email addresses by entering in your email address and password
  • Each time an email address is successfully created on the BlackBerry, a service book should automatically be sent to the BlackBerry and 2 things will happen. 1. Email account icon on the home screen and 2. receive a message stating successful email account activation.
  • If this does not occur, from the PC or BlackBerry Browser, click on send service books, and that should do it.

Now click on Messages icon and open, click on BlackBerry key (left of trackball) and scroll down to Options and click on. Scroll down to Email Reconcilliation and click on. Scroll down to Wireless Reconcile and click on On.
Save changes.

And that should basically be that.... let us know how you get on. If you get stuck, please sing out.

Thanks Thomas!
One more question: is it easy to sync with outlook? Will I need to uninstall my windows sync (as previously used with my dopod) before installing the BB software that comes with the device?
Think I will get the BB Bold tomorrow on the optus 79 cap.

The BlackBerry software is very easy to install and you don't need to remove ActiveSync. When you insert the CD that comes with your device just select to install BlackBerry Desktop Manager and select the Personal Email option. Once installed connect the device and open Desktop Manager and from the Synchronize menu select Synchronization (under configuration) on the left and then Synchronization again on the right. Once the wizard starts just follow the prompts to sync everything with your email client (e.g. Outlook).

Hi Marissa,

As Gary said.... really easy, and they were born to sync. They work very well together.

Good luck with the purchase, and if you have any issues etc, please post back, but let us know when you are up and running.

Thanks so much for your help guys - really appreciated. IThis forum is so helpful - comforting to know I have reliable consultants at my finger-tips! I'm going to call my local optus world store now and see if they have any bolds in stock!

im so confused. when i open desktop manager and click syncronisation (without conecting device) it says "use the default synchronisation settings for te organizer application on my computer" and there is a tab to the right sayong "reset configuration" - should I click this or leave it as is and commect device? What if it syncs to my outlook but erases my calendar entries as nothing is on the phone? I'm paranoid!
