Optus Bold, BIS and Hotmail

Hi Folks,

Apologies in advance if there is an answer to this, but I have trawled the web for some time trying to find a good answer!

I have recently purchases a BB via Optus as a personal phone (BIS), and all is going well so far except the hotmail integration.

I have a hotmail account which is 10 years old (setup in '98). I've setup the account via the setup wizard with the bold and all new messages started to appear on my blackberry.

However, the problem comes when I log onto hotmail on my PC and delete a message via the PC browser - it does not get synchronised onto my BB!

I've read various articles that state that this should work. However, optus technical have stated that this behavious is correct and any deletions made on the hotmail account itself (via the PC browser), will not get reflected!

This seems pretty useless to me... Now I have to delete things twice?

Please, does anyone have any idea if this is "the way it is", or is something wrong than can be done to fix this up?

Grateful for any help!

An update on some testing I've just done. I setup two new email accounts. One on Gmail and one on Yahoo mail (Yahoo 7).

The Gmail account worked in exactly the same way as the hotmail one i.e when you deleted a mail via the PC browser, the change was not reflected back on the Blackberry.

However, the Yahoo mail worked 100% - it synchronised both ways very nicely within a few seconds of the action being taken.

Can anyone shed light on why this is so? I'm really keen to keep my hotmail account as it's established!

Try this; whilst in 'Messages' on you device press 'Application' key (LHS of trackball)>scroll down to 'Options'>select>'Email Reconciliation'>select>select the hotmail account you wish to sync in 'Message Services'>change the 'Delete On' option to 'Mailbox and Handheld'>'Wireless Reconcile' to 'On'. Save and exit changes.
If this does not work then just post back here.
Kindest Regards,
Greg Myers

Hi Greg,
Thanks for responding. I've just checked and the settings were already set to as you described above.

I've done some more investigation... When I log onto BIS via the optus portal, the settings for the accounts (hotmail/yahoo) are different.

When you edit the email accounts on the BIS web screen (via optus):

Yahoo mail has the checkbox "Synchronize deleted items between this mailbox and my device." switched on and it is also visible on the screen

However, for the hotmail account, the checkbox is not visible on the same screen at all.

Any suggestions?

Hey, I'm thinking about going on the Optus 79 BB cap with the Bold, so I just wanted to check: are you getting push Hotmail under the Blackberry server (BIS) in that you are NOT hving to pay EXTRA for using hotmail via the optus WAP? (I've heard there are some issues relating to what exactly IS included/functioning under blackberry unlimited data/email....
I too have had a hotmail account for 10 years and will NOT go with the BOLD on Blackberry unliited 79 cap unless I can be sure that hotmail works as part of my unlimited blackberry data, as PUSH.
Your advice would be most appreciated!

Marissa,
I'm on the $79 cap and you do get hotmail push functionality.

However, according to Optus technical support this morning, this "bug" that I've come across is standard functionality... Apparently if you delete on the internet an email, it will not get reflected back to your blackberry...!

I find this hard to believe in that no-one has reported this apparently to date, so it's either correct (deletes on the server don't get reflected back onto your BB), or Oprus aren't quite right in their assessment of the situation.

My question to the BB community is does anyone have hotmail working on their blackberry (with Optus) so that when you delete a message via Sign In, it is then deleted automatically on your BB?

I'd also be interested if other people have this functionality on other carriers e.g. Vodafone, Telstra etc...

thanks Dunxed.
So apart from the hotmail hitch, are you happy with the BB and with optus's service? Any advice? Should I get a BBB on optus 79 unlimited data plan? (do you need an ABN for this, by the way?)
Is it easy to ensure you do no accidentally use optus internet/WAP and get charged for browsing? is the BIS browser good? Can you browse the net through normal engines such as google, etc?
Thanks!

Hi Marissa,
Yes generally happy except for the hotmail integration issue.

I've also gone for the Classic data plan as I sometimes use the phone as a tethered modem.

However, I've not yet received a bill yet so take it all with a pinch of salt (I'm expecting one soon).

You don't need an ABN as optus allow personal users to buy the phone (as I did).

The BIS browser is good as far as I can tell. There are three icons that allow you to browse:
one called "Browser"
one called "Internet Browser"
one called "WAP".

I understand that if you use the WAP one, then you will get charged per MB as thats the Optus network. The other two are the same and based on the BIS network (I hope!)

Cheers
