Blackberry 8100 on 3 ?

Hi guys,

New here so please be nice to me 

I am currently on three network and I am looking to buy a blackberry. 8707G does not appeal me and due to budget constraints I wish to buy 8100.

I am buying this on e-bay. The question is can this be used on the 3 network.

I am not technocrat and when I call 3, the people across the phone (I think) don’t know much or don’t want to talk anything except 8707G.

Now, I know that 8100 is non 3G and the things that I want to be able to do are :

SMS and Phone : Normal SMS-ing and calls

Emails : Wish to check emails. Can I have my gmail on this. Or I can just forward gmail emails to the three email service. I know that they are no “push” emails so would that mean that I will be using my data to get emails on my three account (that is if 8100 can be used on 3 at all)

Internet : Won’t be using much of it as mostly during the day would be at home or work anyway. But just would like to have access to internet to check on google or something like that.

The question is – can this be done! I was told that I can use Phone and SMS on unlocked 8100 no problems but no guarantee with other servives.

I am really not worried about planet three etc. I could check my account balance etc online anyway right? And not interested in news, facebook,MSN etc either.

Besides this, won’t mind moving away from 3 but would love to stay as my family and friends are all on 3 network.

Is there a prepaid month on month plan on 3 & can the 8100 (unlocked) be used at all ?

If not, then how are Voda, Optus, Telstra etc pricing ?

Sorry about the long note guys, but I would appreciate if anyone can help please!

Cheers
Neil

Hi neilaus,

Welcome to the forum.

Couple of issues as I see them:
  1. 3 is a 3g network, and the 8100 is not
  2. BlackBerries are sorted of designed to run with a BlackBerry plan so that you can use them to their full capacity (believe me when I say once fully connected, there is no going back )
  3. BlackBerries at this stage do not work on pre-paid

My suggestion would be to consider a BlackBerry plan with a suitable carrier, taking into consideration all your current requirements.

Thank you for your reply.

What do you mean by "No turning back".

I bought 8100 and I think Vodafone has a month to month plan of 29$ or something + I can use prepaid for normal phone functionality.

They BB plan gives unlimited email access (29 or 39 not sure - happy with either )

Would that work ?

Hi,

No going back: basically this means once you use your BlackBerry with all its functions as it was designed for, you will never go back to a normal phone.

Please refer back to your other thread re: my comments.

Hi,

I am not sure you are reading this all correctly..... no pre-paid is available if you want your BlackBerry to be connected to Vodafone BIS. Note the following link....
Plans
No where does it mention emails, I am sorry to say.

Her are the pre-paid cap plans, but again, no mention of email plans, or BlackBerry:
Caps

The BlackBerry add on plans are here (but no mention of pre-paid plans):
Pricing

Business post paid contract plans (which include BlackBerry):
Choose the Right Cap

12monthly contract sim only cap plans (BYO mobile) and you can add a data plan:
SIM only Caps

24 month contract where you can add a data plan:
Caps

So to summarise.... you cannot have a pre-paid sim card and a BlackBerry plan together.

Refer to your other thread for a very simple summary, and yes you can have one sim card (not prepaid) with a BlackBerry plan attached, or a Business Plan to cover both.
