Update BlackBerry device drivers manually on a Microsoft Windows-based PC

Procedure

Note: If a previous version of the BlackBerry Desktop Software has been installed, please ensure that you perform a clean uninstall prior to installing the latest version of BlackBerry Desktop Software.

For details on performing a clean uninstall, please refer to BlackBerry Technical Solution Center article KB02206 How to perform a clean uninstall of BlackBerry Desktop Software.

For Microsoft Windows 2000/XP
  1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Click the Hardware tab, then click Device Manager.
  3. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click BlackBerry Device. Select Properties.
  5. Click on the Drivers tab. Click on Update Driver.
  6. In the Hardware Update Wizard, select No, not at this time and click Next.
  7. Select Install from a list or a specific location and click Next.
  8. Remove the checkmark from the Search removable media checkbox.
  9. Click on the Include this location in the search.
  10. Click on Browse.
  11. Browse to the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers and click Ok.
  12. Click on Finish.
For Microsoft Windows Vista

Note: You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
  1. Click on Start and click on Control Panel.
  2. Click on System and Maintenance. Click on Device Manager.
  3. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
  4. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  5. Double-click on BlackBerry Device.
  6. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
  7. Browse to the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\USB Drivers and click Ok.
  8. Click on Finish.

a

please explain to me how could you possible find the blackberry device in the device manager wen ur whole purpose of trying to update the driver becuz ur computer wont detect the phone in the first place...

wen i go to the device manager i see this particular thing though..

Hi,

When you connect a BlackBerry device it may appears in device manager as "Unknown!" which indicates you need to update the driver. If you computer isn't detecting the device correctly connect it via USB with the battery removed and it should detect the device, once the driver is detected insert the battery. Please note that the latest drivers are available via Windows Update if you can't detect them locally.

a

wow by far this is the most complicated task ive ever tried to complete out of my whole entire life...just nuthin seems to complete this ive been at it for days now...i have a blackberry pearl 8100...ive actually updated the drive once b4 frum rim serial port v2.0 to rim serial port v2.1...it restarted my computer and everything but still no hope detecting my blackberry...

now im tryin to add the device manager usb driver file to my windows system32 so that i cud update it to a v3.0 but this time it wont find the file to update?????????????????????????????????????????? help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you connect your device via USB with the battery removed? When you do this your device will appear in Device Manager Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
