Long winded software-related question (please help!)

Hi there,
I'm a new Blackberry user, just wondering if anyone can help me out as I'm not sure where else to turn!
I recently downloaded a new version of Blackberry software for my computer and Blackberry device, but when I installed it onto my Blackberry it erased several menu options (that were present and functional previous to the new software installation), including Email and Internet access.
I have since downloaded other versions of Blackberry software from the Blackberry website, in hopes that I could use them to reset my device again, (and this time include email and internet access) but unfortunately I have not been able to use any of this software to update my Blackberry device.
Can anyone tell me how to reinstall Blackberry software onto my Blackberry device? I.e. erase the current software on my Blackberry, and replace it with new software? I thought I could use the Blackberry Desktop Manager's 'application loader' but when I try to do this, the application loader wizard says 'no system software found for your device' - yet I have definitely downloaded and installed the device software. Help?!
I hope this makes sense. Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers!

It sounds like the new software you downloaded isn't from your devices original provider. Please rename the vendor.xml file in the following directory "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader" to vendor.bak. Once renamed open Desktop Manager and run Application Loader.

In regards to your missing icons I assume you currently don't have a BlackBerry plan assigned to your phone account? When you first put an active BlackBerry SIM card into a device it downloads settings and service books from your provider which adds icons to your device.

Hi there, I appreciate your help but I don't have an AppLoader folder or any vendor files in my Research In Motion folder (or any of it's subfolders). This software was downloaded from the Blackberry.com website.
Also, regarding the missing icons; these went missing after I installed new software on my Blackberry. Prior to this they were fully functional I was using the internet and recieving emails (SIM was not changed, so it can not be associated with the problem).
Basically what I'd like to know is how to reinstall the old software, so that the missing icons will return. My phone is a 7290, if that helps.
Cheers.

The apploader folder may be hidden. Go to "Start > Search > For Files & Folder > All Files and Folder >" and under "More Advanced Options" select "Search Hidden Files and Folders". Now search for vendor.xml.

Followed your instructions, found the file and renamed it. Opened desktop manager and ran application loader - still didn't work. Same message "no system software found for your device" ...
