Vlingo Unveils New BlackBerry Smartphone Service

Vlingo unveils new BlackBerry smartphone service
25th June 2008
Boston.com

Vlingo Corp., a Cambridge firm that offers speech recognition services for mobile devices, said today it is debuting a new application for BlackBerry smartphones.

"Vlingo gives BlackBerry smartphone users control over mobile information and tasks with the power of their voice," the company said in a press release.

Vlingo’s BlackBerry application lets users send emails and text messages, search the Web, open such applications as BlackBerry Calendar and BlackBerry Maps, dial their phones, look up contacts, and even send notes to themselves, all with the power of voice, vlingo said in its release.

The applications are generally available free of charge, though wireless charges may apply, vlingo said.

BlackBerry smartphones are made by Research in Motion Ltd. of Canada.

To see a demonstration on the new service that was prepared by vlingo, please click here. The demonstration is just under two minutes long.

For all of you trying to get this application up and running. I can confirm issues with networking problems in Australia on Optus at this moment. Vlingo are trying hard to rectify the fault. Link; RANT! Pulling A Vlingo - A Case Study | BerryReview
Maybe a little bit pre-mature in their release.
I will post back here when the software is running.

I have managed to get it going on my 8100 - I am on BIS with Telstra, but have had to set the APN to telstra.internet to get it to work, it doesn't work if I have the APN set to blackberry.net -
(can someone please confirm whether this means I will be accessing via Telstra's wap service or via the normal internet connection, I would be grateful for any advice)

EDIT: I have confirmed with Telstra that setting the APN to telstra.internet will incur data charges - back to blackberry.net for me!! I will just have to wait until vlingo can sort out the connectivity problem.

Cheers,
Brian

Latest Update from Vlingo.

After we posted our last Vlingo update we are still getting reports back from readers that Vlingo is not working. Turns out that the WiFi permissions issue exists even if you don’t have WiFi on your phone. One of our writers decided to email them about the issue and got the following response:

We have identified an issue on certain devices in which Vlingo is unable to proceed because it believes that it needs WiFi permissions, even though the device it is running on does not support WiFi. Unfortunately, we do not have a workaround for this. We will be releasing an update to Vlingo in August, and will have a fix for this in that release. We will let you know when it is available.

Thank you for contacting Vlingo!
