Pearl 8120 with GPRS and MMS

Hi,

I recently purchased an 8120 outright and I'm using it on a standard Telstra voice plan with GPRS and MMS codes enabled. I do not have the Blackberry Email or Internet service activated.

I am able to browse with wifi without any problem, but I cannot get this working via GPRS. It did work for the first day, but then it stopped. I've rung Telstra multiple times and no one will help me. I get a different story each time.

I've put the APN of telstra.internet into the GPRS configuration on the Blackberry but I cannot see any area to put the MMSC and MMS GPRS configuration parameters.

Is MMS sent via the BlackBerry Internet service or can it be sent via the standard GPRS?

I'm not really that interested in the push email of Blackberry. I just want to be able to use the J2ME IMAP client I installed (LogicMail) and the standard GPRS browsing.

Did I buy the wrong device?

Thanks.

Hi,

Technically a Blackberry is best used with a Blackberry plan as the device is automatically configured correctly and these plans also allow unlimited email usage.

1. Open the Browser on the device
2. In the Browser press the menu button and select "Go To".
3. In the Go To menu, click the menu button and select "Change Browser".
4. Choose the appropriate Browser option.
5. In the Go To field, type the web page address.
6. Click the trackball to view the web page using browsing service you have selected.

Thanks,

Gary

Thanks for that Garry, but that was the first thing I did.

The 'Telstra Business Portal' browser simply says it cannot connect.

I installed Opera, but it cannot connect to the Internet either. It's as if, my Pearl 8120 has no GPRS connectivity at all.

It does say 'edge' in the top right hand corner, so it is handshaking.

In the TCP settings, there's only place for the APN, Username and Password. There's no place for a gateway IP

Could someone please outline *exactly* how I can configure GPRS and I'll do it from scratch.

Thanks.

If your device has a data connection the EDGE will be displayed in capitals. It would be worth contacting Telstra and doubling checking that you have no GPRS restrictions on your account. Also if you are using your device without a BlackBerry plan ensure you have some form of data plan as "Pay As You Go" rates are very high.

I have no restrictions on my account, GPRS and MMS works fine on my Ericsson mobile with the same SIM. I just tried it again now to double check. Works fine.

I have the data pack enabled on my account as well.

Edit: I got it working and here's how.

As part of my upgrade to a blackberry, I needed a new SIM as my previous SIM was too old and ghetto to work in the 8120. I put the new SIM in my old Ericsson mobile and did a fully factory reset. I then went to configure.telstra.com and sent down the GPRS profiles for MMS and Internet to the phone. I confirmed that MMS and GPRS worked successfully on the Ericsson and then switched it off.

I put the SIM into the Blackberry 8120 and voila! It works! MMS and GPRS settings appear to be stored in the SIM which must be a newish feature of the SIMs compared to the poor old 1998 SIM I still had.

So there's the answer, got problems with MMS and GPRS? Plonk your SIM into a blank phone, send the over-the-air configuration and off you go.

LogicMail, Gmail, Google Maps, Opera, all work over GPRS and wi-fi now.

I feel strangely complete.

So, how do I enter the gateway IP and other GPRS settings into the 8120?

Thanks.
As a BlackBerry is designed to work from the configuration files (service books) that are automatically sent to it all you can do is set the APN as you have already done. If you know anyone that has a Blackberry on Telstra ask to borrow their SIM card for a few minutes, this way you can turn on the device with their SIM and all the settings from Telstra will be downloaded (e.g. MMS and WAP).

whaaaaaaaa!!! Still not having any joy. Put my Telstra SIM into a Palm Treo, could browse the net on that device, everything appeared well. Back in the Blackberry, back to the drawing board. I'm not sure of anyone that has a Blackberry on Telstra, but will hunt one down. Hopefully that may work. Slowly but surely knocking off these fixes. One by one.

How old is your SIM? Tried doing a factory reset of your Treo and then send the over air configuration?

I believe with all networks in Australia to access Internet and MMS on your BlackBerry device you need a BlackBerry enabled sim card. You cannot manually configure the device to access those options (unless theres a third party application going about or a setting I have missed on the BlackBerry device)
