Memory Gone!!!!!

This evening as I was driving home I attempted to call my wife via the inbuilt bluetooth using the voice dialing option when nothing happened. When I looked at my Pearl 8110 I discovered it seamed to be frozen trying to connect. After unfreezing it through turning the phone off and back on I discovered my phone call list was empty. I then had a look at Options > Status and noted the phone had zero free memory. I cleared out the browser cache memory but alas this didn't free all the memory up. Earlier this week when I looked at the free memory I had around 2MB available. I haven't installed any new software so have no idea where the memory has gone. I did add about 5 caller ID photos to contacts be we are only talking 10kb each images.

Has anyone got any ideas on where my memory has gone?

GPS is turned on, but it has been for a couple of weeks now and I can't see how this would be draining the memory.

Hi Harps,
It's a memory leak. Do a 'Battery Pull' reset and this will free up your memory again. It depends on what OS you are running as to how bad (or fast) the leak occurs. You can try; 'Options'>'Security Options'>'Memory Cleaning'. Enable this and it should Slow the rate of leakage. (This option is not available in all devices or OS's). Make sure you clear your 'Cache' in your browser regularly as this also helps to keep the leak at bay.
Hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
Greg Myers

Thanks Greg.
I did have the Memory Cleaning option already enabled and when I fired up the BlackBerry this morning (when my alarm turned it back on) I now have 800kb free. (Still a long way short of the 2MB+ I'm sure I had earlier this week).
Does BlackBerry allow you to save & run an application (such as Facebook) from the memory card? My past (& now dead) Palm PDA's use to do this allowing the system memory to be freed up.

I've just the soft reset through pulling out and putting back in the battery and my free memory is now 11.4MB! Thats amazing. I can't belive that I lost so much memory. From your comments Greg I gather this is a known common problem. Has BlackBerry acknowledged as such and is a fix going to be part of the os 4.5 release?

Hi Harps,

Unfortunately you can't run applications from the memory card but if you go to "Options > Advanced Options > Applications" and delete unwanted apps. The first thing to look at deleting is any non required languages (e.g. Chinese or Japanese etc) as you can free up some more memory.

Thanks,

Gary

No fix in the new OS either Harps. (some of the Beta's are better than the others but the issue still remains). Hopefully it is fixed in the next range of devices though.
I have tried a number of combinations for fixing this but none have really worked properly (some have slowed the rate of leakage). These include deleting Viigo (RSS reader), timed deletion of my emails, erasing all bar 1 or 2 themes and removing mapping applications. None of these seemed to affect the rate much.
One thing I did find that helps is that when you are viewing or listening to any media, close the application when you have finished (don't just 'Back' key out).

Yes this is a very annoying feature of the Blackberry pearl 8100. I have to pull the battery out, every few days or so, just so it doesnt "wipe" all the text messages and call lists and emails. Its very annoying but I think they have done a better job with the newer versions than what I have. The new pearls have more memory to avoid system failures like this, but I hear it still happens.

But you did the right thing by popping the battery out and letting it have a hard reboot.

If you are continually having to restart your device you need to backup your device and do a handheld wipe. Once you restore the data BIS users will need to resend the service books from the webclient and BES users have to reactivate. Also ensure all non required languages are removed and the camera is set to save onto the memory card instead of device memory.
