Question 8120 with Optus Network Notification Message

I'm with Optus using a BB Pearl 8120. It's an Optus BB, 4.5 firmware.

When I turn on the phone, before it connects to the network it displays a dialogue box which says:

Network Notification (2002) Welcome to the OPTUS Network. OK / Save.

This happens everytime I switch the phone on and must be actively dismissed. If I hit OK or Save the message it makes no difference, as next time the phone behaves the same. Save just saves the message in the Inbox.

It doesn't happen when any other operator SIM card is in the phone. Even if the SIM is valid BB SIM e.g. put in a Vodafone SIM, you don't receive the message.

Have change SIMs with Optus (in case I had a faulty SIM) but problem didn't go away.

I have checked with Optus and it's not a SMS, coming from their SMSC. I have checked all the obvious things (Cell Broadcast settings, Network selection) - but no matter what I change I can't make it go away.

I have also tested a brand new, fresh out of the box, 8120 that has never been used (Optus BB 8120 4.3 firmware) and the same thing happens.

Is anyone else is experiencing this on Optus with any of the 81x series pearls? And has anyone found a way to make it not happen.

It's an annoying message because the BB won't show any other alerts, pull down email, etc. until I dismiss the dialog. And since I use Auto On/Off it means when the phone starts up early morning there's no emails waiting for me because the BB is waiting for me to be excited and hit OK to the message.

Anyone have any thoughts? or similar experience? TIA

Hi,

I have found a few posts from users on various forums around the world and they are experiencing the same issue as you. Unfortunately no one has offered an answer so I can only take an educated guess at the cause. So as an overview this is my line of thinking:

1. If you have tried different devices and this issue is persistent it would have to be related to the SIM.
2. As you have tried changing SIMs it could be the type of SIM card you are using e.g. It may be a 3G SIM and your device is only 2G
3. The only similar issue I have seen where a user receives a SMS with the text "Network Notification: New Voice Mail message waiting: OK or Save". This issue was caused by having "Pager Notification" option enabled under voice mail (I don’t believe this option is present under Phone option on Australian devices). As a test have Optus disable the voicemail service on your account to test if this is the cause.
4. As a last resort you may need to have Optus remove all the service codes from your service and the reactivate them.

Thanks,

Gary

2G v 3G SIM

I came to a similar conclusion as you. I think it's a 3G SIM issue and the 8120 is 2G only. Asking around a few Optus stores it seems that Optus only issues 3G SIMs these days, so looks like I am stuck with the "feature".

I did put a Vodafone prepaid SIM into the 8120 and didn't get any welcome message. Not sure if Vodafone prepaids are 2G only, the chip contact design on the SIM differed, but that could mean anything.

Thanks for your thoughts though!
