BippePassword entries are not created in the registry

BippePassword entries are not created in the registry

Doc ID : KB05338
Last Modified : 2008-01-17
Document Type : Support

Environment
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.1 Service Packs 1 through 4
  • BlackBerry Collaboration Service
  • BlackBerry MDS Connection Service
  • SDR88315
  • SDR87472
Background

The BlackBerry inter-process protocol (BIPP) is used to transmit data between various processes in the BlackBerry Enterprise Server. BIPP encryption (BIPPe) encrypts inter-process communication between various BlackBerry Enterprise Server components to prevent outside parties from viewing transmitted data. The encryption is based on a password typed initially by the system administrator.

The following registry key holds the password:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Dispatcher\BippePassword

Problem

No Secure Connection Password is typed during the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation process. After installation, a Secure Connection Password is specified in the BlackBerry Server Configuration Tool.

After the new password is created, the BippePassword entries are not created in the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Collaboration Service

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry MDS Connection Service

As a result, errors appear in the following log entries:
These lines appear in the BlackBerry Dispatcher log when attempting to use the BlackBerry Browser or Enterprise Messenger.
[30514] (07/17 04:20:22):{0x164C} [BIPPe] (S123456:C3,IPPP) Connecting secure client
[20399] (07/17 04:20:22):{0x164C} [BIPPe] Authentication failed for S123456:C3,IPPP: Authentication Failed (2)
[30127] (07/17 04:20:23):{0xE48} [BIPPe] Connection established with 127.0.0.1 0x00c5b728
[30149] (07/17 04:20:23):{0x164C} [BIPPe] (S123456:C3,IPPP)(127.0.0.1) shutting down 0x00c5af58T
This line appears in the BlackBerry® Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS) connection service log:
server lost SRP connection with UID S123456 due to java.io.EOFException
Additionally BlackBerry smartphone users will not be able to browse using the BlackBerry Browser and will be presented with the following error on the BlackBerry smartphone:

'Unable to connect to the selected Mobile Data Service'

The following lines are also relevant to the BlackBerry Collaboration Service:

BlackBerry smartphone users will be unable to connect via the Enterprise Messenger or via the BlackBerry Collaboration Service.

Cause

No Secure Connection Password was entered during the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation process. Or if using a remote BlackBerry Collaboration Service - the Secure Passwords do not match between the BlackBerry Enterprise Server and the BlackBerry Collaboration Service.

Workaround

Remove the Secure Connection Password entry in the registry.
Warning: Some of the procedures in this article involve modifying the computer registry. This can cause substantial damage to the Microsoft® Windows® operating system. Document and back up the existing registry entries prior to implementing any changes.
  1. Delete any of the following registry keys if they exist: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\Dispatcher\BippePassword
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry MDS Connection Service\BippePassword
  2. Use the BlackBerry Server Configuration Tool to set the Secure Connection Password (if using remote BlackBerry Collaboration Service or BlackBerry MDS Connection Service, this should be the same on both the production and remote servers).
  3. Restart the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service or BlackBerry Collaboration Service (depending on which one was reconfigured), and the BlackBerry Dispatcher.
Note: You may try to restart the BlackBerry Enterprise Server services if restarting the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service and BlackBerry Dispatcher does not help.
Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
