Hi

We are currently on BES 4.1 SP5, can you please provide me a procedure on how to setup the BES so that our blackberry users can use the internet through the corporate proxy. I want the users to use the blackberry browser.

Thank you

To configure proxy settings for the BlackBerry Mobile Data System (BlackBerry MDS) Connection Service, complete the following steps:
  1. In BlackBerry Manager, select BlackBerry MDS Connection Service.
  2. On the Connection Service tab, click Edit Properties.
  3. Click Proxy.
  4. Double-click Proxy Mappings.
  5. Click New.
  6. In the URL field, type the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) expression that the proxy mapping rule will control.
  7. In the Description field, type a description of the proxy mapping rule.
  8. Double-click Proxy String.
  9. Click New.
  10. In the Proxy Type drop-down list, do any of the following configurations:
    • Click PROXY, then double-click the Proxy String field. Type the proxy server name and port number, or exclude the URL from routing through the proxy server.
    • Click DIRECT, double-click the Proxy String field, and delete the default value.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Click OK again.

Additional Info

To configure a specific URL for an internal site that already has the Catch All proxy URL configuration in place (http://.* <http://.*/> ), place the new URL before the Catch All proxy URL as described in the example below.

Example

BlackBerry device users need to browse internal web sites and can currently only browse external web sites. The current proxy mappings are configured with http://.* or the default long universal string. To configure the proxy mappings, the specific entries should come before the Catch All setting. The Catch All setting will only be evaluated if the web site the BlackBerry device user is browsing does not meet the first criteria in the list.
The resulting list should look like the following:
http://<internal_server_name>.*
http://.*
where <internal_server_name> is the specific server that will be accessed internally

How to use IT policy rules to hide browsers on the BlackBerry smartphone

How to use IT policy rules to hide browsers on the BlackBerry smartphone

Doc ID : KB15242
Last Modified : 2008-08-01
Document Type : How To

Environment

  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server

Procedure

The Browser application supports multiple browser configurations including the WAP Browser, the Internet Browser, and the BlackBerry® Browser. For more information about the browser configurations available on BlackBerry smartphones, see KB05483.

The following IT policy rules can be used to disable the browser configurations on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Disabling the WAP Browser

To disable the WAP Browser, set Enable WAP Config to False.

Disabling the Internet Browser

To disable the Internet Browser, set Allow IBS Browsers to False.
If the MDS Browser Use Separate Icon IT policy rule is used when Allow IBS Browsers is set to False, the browser is not disabled. Instead, one icon on the BlackBerry smartphone is hidden.

Disabling all browsers other than the BlackBerry Browser

To disable all Internet Browsing Service (IBS) and WAP carrier browsers, in the Service Exclusivity Policy Group set Allow Other Browser Services to False.

This IT policy rule changes the Default Browser on the BlackBerry smartphone to the BlackBerry Browser with no other browser available on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Disabling the BlackBerry Browser

To disable the BlackBerry Browser, set Allow Browser to False.

Additional Info

The Allow Other Browser Services and Enable WAP Config IT Policy rules can affect Multimedia Message Service (MMS) messages because many carriers use WAP for MMS messaging. See KB11766 for more information.

Hi,

In short when you select Proxy as the option you can leave the URL setting as .*://.*(:\d*)?(/.*)*(\?.*)? as this will send all traffic to the proxy server (or you can create separate http and https entries). Also you can enter a separate entry with a URL of e.g. http://intranet and then set it to go Direct and bypass the proxy.

Proxy Example:

When you add the proxy string just select PAC as the type and then point to the proxy.pac file.

Hi I have tried putting the following in the proxy string field but still getting access denied.

file:////ipaddress\pac$\proxy.pac also tried \\proxyserver ip address\pac$\proxy.pac

The proxy.pac file is shared out on the proxy server itself.

Thank you

It is extremely unusual to access a pac file via file path or network path. Normally the pac file is located on the proxy server and is access via URL e.g. http://proxyserver/proxy.pac

Hi Our pac file is shared out as a file, If i dont use the pac and just enter the proxy address, I can get the internet on the blackberry devices but it does ask for login credentials. How can I get it to authenticate without asking for authentification?

Thank you
