Bold 9000 on Optus BES $59.95 plan

Okay I am new here but need a few questions answered that no one at Optus appears able to help me with.

Work purchased this phone for me a few weeks ago and left it to me to organise a plan. We have no Blackberry enterprise server set up at work as this is the only BB handset we have. I signed up for the $59.95 unlimited plan for a month by month to see how it went. I set up the email settings for work and it all works fine (we have an exchange server). I also set up a personal gmail account and that works fine also.

What is the main concern is that a work colleague recently took over a departing colleague's i-Phone and proceeded to use the phone with his existing sim card and no data bolt on. Our company recently received a bill for $1,800 data usage for his number!

The questions I have are:

1) Does the unlimited emails on the plan that I am using include all attachments if I choose to download them.

2) I know I can only use the internet browser or browser - which tries to switch to the WAP for streaming media, I have disabled this. Why does this happen?

3) I have installed google maps but am hesitant to use it as I have no way of knowing how it obtains its data. Is it WAP or BB browser?

4) As we do not have the Enterprise server installed is there any way of having Optus route all data through the BB browser?

If any one has any suggetions or can answer my questions it would be much appreciated as I do not want to receive an exhorbitant bill like my colleague.

By the way, I have wifi at home and work so when I download any applications it is using the wifi connection.

Kind regards

Malcolm

1) yep all email attachments are included
2) That's how it's set up. I assume its because a) Blackberry don;t want their network clogged by multimedia traffic b) lets the carriers make money by charging for wap data
3)
- Goto Options->Advanced Options-> TCP. remove the APN info. & disable this
- Goto Options->Advanced Options-> Browser & make sure the default browsers are (I think it's Blackberry Brwoser or Internet Browser.
4) Email & Blackberry browser use the free data

lastly you should be able to ask Optus to disable WAP on your sim. (don't let them say you can't as Blackberry needs it, it doesn't).

Hi,

Just as an FYI if you have signed up for a $59.95 BES plan you are paying for a plan that you are not using (This is for users connecting to a BlackBerry Enterprise Server only). First you need to go back to Optus and change the plan to a BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) plan which is around $30pm. The BES plan you are on does not provide the "Internet Browser" by default so they can charge you for all web and application data. Once the correct plan is on your account you must go to Options > Advanced Options > Browser and set the default to Internet Browser.

Thanks,

Gary

Thanks for the info.
Regarding the first reply, I checked the APN settings and the box is unchecked. I also checked the defult browser is set to Internet browser. I had already hidden the WAP browser. Another thing I did was to turn off data when roaming, don't know if this helps?

Second reply. I was told I needed a BES plan as we have a Microsoft Exchange server at work. The two BES plans offer either 1MB for $29.95 or unlimited for $59.95. I opted for the unlimited.

This will lead me to another question.

Will the gmail account still be free on the BES plan?

Thanks

Malcolm

Unless you have a Blackberry Enterprise Server at work which you need to be activated onto you do not need a BES plan. I assume you setup your email via the BlackBerry Web Client? If this is the case you need to call Optus as you are being over charged, as mention you only need a $30 (I think it may even be a little less) unlimited BIS plan.

Thanks for your help here. I will switch to the Optus BIS $19.95 plan that includes all email and 512mb internet.
Can I also add an Optus 200Mb $9.95 data pack on top of this? Would this cover me for when I use google maps or Live messenger etc?
Sorry for the questions but work has left this to me to sort out.

Regards
Malcolm

Thanks Gary.

I have now had my phone switched to the 'Yes business Blackberry' $19.95 BIS plan which includes unlimited access to POP3 email and 512mb use of the internet browser and applications (it appear Optus have just updated this to include the word 'applications' )
Of course Optus told our broker that email and internet would not work if I disabled WAP on the sim card - I have not done this yet.

With our email at work not being POP3 (exchange server) I assume the BB is connecting in the same way that I would log in at home viahttps://mail.company.com.au/exchange
Is this using the 512mb data allowance to access this email and attachments?

I also have a gmail account linked to the phone which I assume is free?

Regards

Malcolm

If you configure your Gmail and OWA account via the BlackBerry Web Client all data is included in your 512MB quota.

Thankyou once again Gary.

The switch to the BIS plan happened yesterday and my emails from work are still coming through. I turned my phone on and off a couple of times throughout the day but this morning when I checked the email settings in the setup wizard my work account had changed to invalid and a new option of validate appeared. I clicked on this and it validated the address.

Should the corporate email still be working through the BIS plan? And if it is should I just leave it as such. I do not receive attachments on the gmail account, I just use it as an address when I sign up to forums and such.

I have no idea how to set up email via Blackberry web client but I would expect to find info here should I need to.

Sorry for all these questions - BB just seems to get more confusing for me.

Thanks once again

Malcolm

Okay, I was just experimenting with the Web client. I tried to login in to-www.blackberry.com/go/email/optus from my computer, it said I had to do it from my device, which I did. I did not realise that the email setup in the setup menu led me to exactly the same place so all should be fine.
