Unable to start BlackBerry Policy and Synchronization Services

    Hi All,

After updating BES 4.0 to 4.1 I haven't been able to start "BlackBerry Policy" and "Synchronization Services". The event log is recording the errors as 5003 or 5007 errors.

    Thanks,

    JT

    Problem
After upgrading from BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.0 to 4.1, all of the BlackBerry? services start except for the following:

    The BlackBerry Attachment Service
The BlackBerry Policy Service, which receives service-specific error 5003.
The BlackBerry Synchronization Service, which receives service-specific error 5007.

    Resolution
Install or upgrade the MSXML Parser to 4.0 Service Pack 2. You can obtain the MSXML Parser through one of the following ways:

Extract the BlackBerry Enterprise Server installation package. Go to the Tools folder and run the msxml.msi file.

Download the msxml.msi file from the Microsoft? Download Center.
Download details: MSXML 4.0 Service Pack 2 (Microsoft XML Core Services)

    A variation on JamesT's problem.

I'm a part-time sys-admin, and my 5 BlackBerry users started reporting that they were getting no emails 3-4 days ago. Today is the first chance I've had to address the issue.

I restarted the BlackBerry server (BESX vers. 4.1.2), and got 3 error messages: BB Policy Service service terminated (5003), BB Dispatcher service terminated (5608), and BB Synchronization Service service terminated (5201).

I checked to see what MSXML software is installed, and I find the following:
    MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978)
    MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB936181)
MSXML 4.0 SP2 Parser and SDK
    MSXML 6.0 Parser (KB933579)

I don't have the fuzziest idea what is the relationship between MSXML and BESX, but I wondered if that MSXML 6.0 Parser might be at the root of the trouble. Has anybody reported problems with it.

Otherwise, are there any other suggestions?

    Adrian (a.k.a. NatFarmFed).

    Hi Adrian,

In order to correct your issue you need to download and install the latest BlackBerry Service Pack (BES 4.1 Service Pack 4 - Exchange). When installing the service pack you need to ensure you are logged on using the BlackBerry Service Account which is commonly set as BESadmin. During the installation of the service pack it will update any required components such as MSXML.

    Thanks,

    Gary

    Thanks.

    Gary,

You're a champ. It's working now. I can go home before something else goes wrong.

    Cheers. Adrian Benstead.
