Calendar entries are not updated when the mailbox is hidden

Calendar entries are not updated when the mailbox is hidden

Doc ID : KB04661
Last Modified : 2007-09-18
Document Type : Support

Environment
  • BlackBerry® Enterprise Server for Microsoft® Exchange
  • BlackBerry smartphone
Problem

Calendar entries created on the BlackBerry smartphone do not appear in the Microsoft® Outlook® calendar.

The following error message appears in the BlackBerry Enterprise Server logs:

MAPI_E_LOGON_FAILED(80040111)

Cause

The BlackBerry smartphone user’s mailbox is hidden from the Global Address List (GAL), so the BlackBerry Enterprise Server cannot resolve the BlackBerry smartphone user’s mailbox.

When a Calendar entry is entered on the BlackBerry smartphone, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server creates a temporary Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profile to access the BlackBerry smartphone user’s mailbox.

When the mailbox is hidden from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server, the temporary MAPI profile cannot be created.

Resolution

To set the BlackBerry smartphone user’s mailbox to appear in the GAL, complete the steps for your software version you are using.
For Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 or 2003
  1. For Microsoft Exchange Server 2000, go to Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers. OR
For Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, go to Start > Programs > Microsoft Exchange > Active Directory Users and Computers.
  2. From the menu, select View > Advanced Features.
  3. In the left pane, select the Users folder.
  4. In the right pane, right-click the BlackBerry smartphone user’s account and select Properties.
  5. Click the Exchange Advanced tab.
  6. Clear the Hide from Exchange address lists check box.
For Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5
  1. Go to Start > Programs > Microsoft Exchange > Exchange Administrator.
  2. Click the Recipient container.
  3. Double-click the user’s mailbox to view the mailbox properties.
  4. Click the Advanced tab.
  5. Clear the Hide from address book check box.
  6. Click OK to close the mailbox properties window.

What if we want the mailbox hidden???

I have a client that has a BlackBerry. He also has two mailboxes on the Exchange 2003 server. His executive assistant has full access to the one that is 'published'. His BB is hooked to the second account which is hidden. He uses it for calendaring, to which she has access. He also gets his email that she has filtered and forwarded to this account. I suspect that he also gets email from specific people directly to that account, but the point is that it needs to be hidden so that others in the company do not accidentally send mail into that account.

What happens is that everytime something is done to the server, like rebooting, or something that affects BES, we have to unhide his account, he makes a calendar entry, it syncs and then we hide it again. It works fine until the next time.

Is there any way to get around this problem???

Thanks!
