Hi,

Has any one try to test the above? It looks like it allow you to configure it in Blackberry server but when you try to deploy it, if you check the logs it has a entry similiar to

20000] (04/01 23:15:56.220):{0x94C} Duplicate module: "net_rim_bb_timezoneupdater" found at "D:\Program Files\Blackberry Enterprise Server\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\PackageCache\FILESHARE_vipserver\research in motion\DST 2008\net_rim_bb_timezoneupdater.cod" discarded ("D:\Program Files\Blackberry Enterprise Server\BlackBerry Enterprise Server\PackageCache\FILESHARE_vipserver\research in motion\DST 2008 Update 4.1\net_rim_bb_timezoneupdater4.1.cod" retained)

And the update wont deploy to the BB's. I've even changed the cod file and it still thought it was a duplicate when both fixes are for different BB versions. I think the only way around it is to try do what elwynw stated in a post before.

On the same BlackBerry Enterprise Server, copy C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\ to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion_2\ and copy the Apploader directory. Run the index from the new location (Research In Motion_2)."

Has anyone else has similiar problems?

Elwynw asked - "does it make a difference if Date/Time source on device is set to Network or Blackberry?"
We "thought" that BlackBerry meant that the time source was RIM and Network meant that the time source was the BES server. Well, the BlackBerry bit was right but the Network meant the time source was the telco. Our telco advised us that they rarely send out Service Books and the like...so we have now have to revisit our customer base to make the modification to BlackBerry as the date/time source.

I always ensure the time source is set to BlackBerry and please refer to the Source Definitions below:
  • BlackBerry - Synchronizes the time with the Research In Motion® BlackBerry Infrastructure and not the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  • Network - Synchronizes the time with your service provider's network time.
  • Off - Does not synchronize the date or time.

We removed BES 4.1.2 completely(including SQL database) and reinsalled 4.1.5 a while ago. Do we need to reinstall the Blackberry timezone update patch again since the SQL database was recreated?

After the reinstallation of BES we also had many errors - "Faulting application CalHelper.exe, version 4.1.5.40, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.1830, fault address 0x0003248b." in the event log. I did a search for CDO.dll and found two versions. One is in "C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033\NT" and another one is in "D:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\bin". I also checked registry and found that the one registered is in 1033\NT directory. So I unregistered that CDO.DLL and registered again with the one in Exchsrvr/bin. I am not sure if that will help to fix the problem. I could not find another CDO.dll in the BES installation directory though.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

The BlackBerry Enterprise Server software from SP5 and higher already includes the DST database patch. Now that SP6 is available I would highly recommend you perform the update as it is require for the new device firmware 4.5 features (e.g. HTML email). In regards to your error messages you will need to ensure Outlook isn’t installed on the BES and you have Exchange System Manager installed running the same service packs as the mail server. (Compare the versions of cdo.dll and mapi32.dll between the BES and mail server).

Thanks,

Gary

Hello Gary,

Our company's BES server is version: 4.1.5.26

So in other words, we do not require the DB upgrade? So do we need to deploy only the 2 patches 4.1 and 4.2 out to the handsets? (In jad format)

Lastly, how do we deploy the patches in jad format? I seem to have trouble with them in trying to add them in software configuration. I even downloaded the patch manager 2.5 and placed alx/cod files and did the loader.exe /index command but only saw them once and never seen them since.

Appreciate your advice.

Cheers,
Ryan.

Hi,

The DB update is included in SP5 but I would recommend upgrading to SP6 for feature updates. If you have deployed the Patch Manager 2.5 to your devices that will be sufficient to cover the handheld requirements. As an overview I have listed the steps below to correctly deploy the DST update to your handhelds:

1. Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion and create a folder called Shared

2. Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared and create a folder called Applications

3. Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Applications and create a folder called DSTPatch

4. Download the Patch Manager 2.5 and extract the net_rim_bb_timezoneotapatcher.cdo & net_rim_bb_timezoneotapatcher.alx into the DSTPatch folder

5. From the command prompt go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Apploader and run Loader.exe /index
Note: If this command is successful a specification.pkg and PkgDBCache will appear in the DSTPatch folder.

6. Go to c:\Program Files\Common Files\ and share the Research In Motion Folder

7.Open BlackBerry Manager and go to the Software Configurations tab and select Add New Configuration

8.Once the New Config window appears enter the following information:

- Configuration Name: DST2008
- Configuration Description: DST 2007-2008 Patch Version 2.5
- Device Software Location: \\servername\Research In Motion

9.Once you add the Device Software Location the package will appear in the windows below under Application Software.

10.Under Application Software select the checkbox beside TimezoneOtaPatcher and change the Delivery option to Wireless

11.Now select the Polices menu at the bottom left and create a new policy and in the Name section put DST Patch and change External Network Connections to Allowed. Now select Apply and OK to save the settings

12.Now return to the Application Software screen and you will see a drop down box beside the delivery option you set to wireless earlier. In the drop box select the DST Patch item and then select OK at the bottom to save

13.Within Blackberry Manager you need to ensure you I.T Policy allows “WAP Config” and “Third Party Applications”

14.Within Blackberry Manager go to your users list and select all your users and then right mouse click and select Assign Software Configuration and select DST2008 and then press OK.

15.Now select all you users again and select “Update Configuration Check Status” which will check each device to see if the patch is installed or requires installation. This information can be found by selecting a user and scrolling to the bottom of the user’s properties window.

16.To force deploy the application (i.e. Bypass the default 4 hour wait period) select all your users and press the right mouse button and choose the Deploy Applications option.

Thanks Gary for your help, appreciate it.

One more question, when the 5th of October arrives, do I have to wind back the clock on my blackberry server?

After deploying the software configuration, it seems to have fixed the timing on calenders for the 2 weeks from 5th of October onwards.

The time on your BlackBerry will automatically update if the device is running the correct DST patch. There is no need to change the time on your BlackBerry server as the device does not reference this time. To help you understand the device time source options I have detailed them below:

Time Source Options:
  • BlackBerry - Synchronizes the time with the Research In Motion® BlackBerry Infrastructure and not the BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
  • Network - Synchronizes the time with your service provider's network time.
  • Off - Does not synchronize the date or time.
