Using SQL Server Management Studio Express

Gary,

My clients are using BES 4.1.5 with MSDE on MS Exchange 2003. They want to move the BES to another server.

I have already installed the exact BES version onto the new server with a new blank MSDE.

What I have done:

1. Used BlackberryDBBackup.exe on the old server to back up the Blackberry Configuration Database

2. Copied the backup to the new BES server

3. Used BlackberryDBRestore.exe to restore that backup onto the new BES

My questions are:

1. After restoring the database to the new BES, there are instances showing the old BES name on Blackberry Manager. Can this be changed using SQL Server Management Studio Express like the guide you provided on this site? Without any repercussions?

2. Will this impact the old BES?

3. Is it safe for me to format the old BES after I have used SQL Server Management Studio Express to edit the fields in the database to reflect the new BES name?

4. I have noticed that before using SQL Server Management Studio Express, when I run the BB services on the new BES, the old BES has two services running (i forgot which ones). But I have already disabled the BB services on the old BES before running the new BES. Why is this?

5. Can I say that after using SQL Server Management Studio Express on the transferred database on the new BES, I can discontinue the old BES?

Sorry to inconvenience you, it's just that I seek confirmation before I can proceed with this activity.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Before proceeding please shut down your old BES and restart your new BES. I need to ensure nothing is linked back to the old server so please confirm the new BES runs correctly. If the new BES is running correctly you can perform the following:

1. In SQL Manager open the ServerConfig table and edit the following fields to display the new server name:

-ServiceName
-MachineName
-RPCEndPoint (only edit the name after “\pipe\BESMonitor” )

2. In SQL Manager open the MDSConfig and edit the following fields to display the new server name:

-MDSHost
-MachineName
-ServerName (only edit the name before “_MDS-CS_X”)

3. Open BlackBerry Manager and the server name should be displayed correctly.

4. In BlackBerry Manager select "BlackBerry Domain" (at the top) in the left "Explorer View" window. Now select the "Software Configurations" tab and remove any push applications that may have been configured on the old BES (This may be empty if you haven't pushed applications or DST updates to the devices).

5. Restart your new BES again and ensure it starts correctly. If everything is OK please uninstall your old BES software.

Please post back if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Gary
