Email message delivery to the BlackBerry device delayed
Doc ID : KB04015
Last Modified : 2007-06-27
Document Type : Support
Environment- BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 4.0
- Novell® GroupWise®
- BlackBerry device
- SDR52503
Problem
Mail flow for all BlackBerry device users on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server can slow down if a BlackBerry device user account on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server has any of the following issues:
- Extremely large mailbox
- Resides on a remote post office using a slow connection
- Post Office has stopped working
Note:
Extremely large does not correspond to a fixed value because it is based on variable server hardware specifications and the data transfer rates across the network.
Cause
The following causes are related to this problem.
Cause 1
It is not possible to use the Novell application programming interface (API) to check exclusively for changes in the mailbox. The BlackBerry Controller must scan the BlackBerry device user's entire mailbox for new messages.
The length of time it takes to scan depends on the size of the mailbox.
Larger mailboxes will take longer to scan. The length of the delay for email message delivery depends on the length of time it takes to scan.
Cause 2
A Post Office that has BlackBerry device users from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on it has stopped running.
Note: This is a previously reported issue that has been escalated internally to our development team. No resolution time frame is currently available.
Workaround

Workaround
Ask BlackBerry device users with large mailboxes (any affected BlackBerry device users) to move email messages to archive folders on a regular basis.
Cause 2
A Post Office that has BlackBerry device users from the BlackBerry Enterprise Server on it has stopped working.
Workaround
Get the Post Office back in a working state. If this is not possible, disable the BlackBerry device users on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server that are on the Post Office until the Post Office is working. Restart the BlackBerry Controller after the BlackBerry device users are disabled.
